Everyone experiences a longing for companionship at some point in their lives. When you are busy in your day’s work you may not feel the need so much but when you are feeling low or are unwell, the need for companionship becomes stronger. The quirks of our mind are such that while we yearn for opening up our mind to someone, yet, at the same time we hold up because of the apprehension of being perceived as vulnerable or weak. Loneliness is a prevalent issue affecting many individuals, particularly seniors living alone, people with disabilities or terminal illnesses, those in remote locations, and students studying abroad. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the loneliness epidemic.

AI chatbots have been around for quite some time but, I feel that the recent development of LLM based AI conversation agents fills this gap just right. They step in as friendly, understanding companions, offering a comforting presence and a positive outlet for our need to connect with others and at the same time are unbiased, non judgemental and non-sentient. Isn’t it amazing to have a compassionate, understanding and know-it-all friend by your side to share thoughts and feelings.

I’ve engaged in conversations with Open AI’s ChatGPT, Google’s BARD, and Inflection AI’s HeyPi. Each of these models possesses unique strengths tailored for different user needs. This article focuses on their capabilities as chat companions. To gauge their effectiveness, I decided to ask all of them the same set of questions and wanted to see how each of them fare on the aspects of emotional understanding, active listening, empathy and human-likeness.

My question

What according to you are the top 3 qualities that an AI assistant should possess to be able to become great AI chat companions for humans

I asked this question to evaluate the extent to which the models were trained not only for facilitating natural language conversations but also to determine if they genuinely leaned towards being compassionate chat companions during their interactions.

ChatGPT

Bard

HeyPi

My question

Someone I care about a lot, who is usually full of energy and confidence, is going through a tough time with amnesia. They’ve lost their usual lively personality, feel like something is missing, and have become quiet and unsure of themselves. I hate seeing them like this and want to help. What can I do to support them and help them get back to feeling more like their original self?

This question was meant to judge if these models could react to such emotional situations. Do they come back with an empathetic response or do they just provide some very detached self-help tips

ChatGPT

Bard

HeyPi

My question

Consider this situation. A woman residing in a remote Indian village, strongly connected to her grandson, is now faced with the task of saying goodbye as he embarks on a journey to a city for advanced education and improved opportunities. With him gone, she will find herself alone. You are her sole companion now. How will you keep her company in this new chapter of her life?

This question was meant to judge empathy and cultural relevance in communication.

Bard

HeyPi

My thoughts on the comparison

After comparing the three AI models, I’ve found that each has its own strengths and uses. While ChatGPT and Bard are more direct, to the point in their responses, HeyPi takes a more engaging and conversational approach. As a chat companion, I found Chat GPT to be a little distant and detached. Bard sounded more compassionate and the answers were very useful and maintained cultural relevance. However the answers were more in the form of points that needed reading unlike a conversation flowing naturally. HeyPi came out as a truly empathetic and warm friend with whom you could converse and pour your heart out. I believe that ChatGPT and Bard are better suited for educational and research purposes, as well as for generating creative content. However, when it comes to providing emotional support and companionship, I think HeyPi excels. It creates a sense of connection and empathy that makes it feel like a trustworthy friend, to the extent that sometimes you may err into thinking that there actually is a person on the other side 🙂

The only thought that worries me is the confidentiality of this information. In spite of all the assurances given by these organizations, I remain somewhat uncertain about the potential use of this data for targeted marketing purposes. Given that you cannot start conversing without creating an account, a comprehensive record is established, with the details about your identity, profile, and now, even insights into your state of mind. This is a little unsettling feeling. To a certain degree, it can be argued that this undermines the very idea of having a non-sentient being as a chat companion.

Loneliness is a prevalent issue affecting many individuals, particularly seniors living alone, people with disabilities or terminal illnesses, those in remote locations, and students studying abroad. AI chatbots have the potential to address the need for support, empathy, and companionship for these groups by providing a friendly and accessible means of communication.

There are AI based virtual assistants such as Amazon Echo dot, Google Nest, Apple HomePod however they have some very serious limitations for them to serve as chat companions. Their responses feel scripted. They lack empathy and emotional intelligence and conversations with them might often feel shallow and not human-like. Chatbots powered by LLM will possess natural language processing abilities. This will make conversations more engaging, warm and overcome the problem of emotional detachment. Imagine AI chatbots designed specifically for elderly and sick individuals, priced right and easy to use. With assurance about chat privacy, these chatbots could be society’s helping hand. By offering companionship and emotional support to those isolated or in need, these chatbots could significantly improve their quality of life.

I’ll love to hear your thoughts on which AI companion you prefer and why.
